10 Best Family Destinations for October Holidays: Europe & Beyond

October can be one of the best months of the year for a family holiday โ€” if you choose the destination carefully. In northern Europe, autumn is already well underway, while further south you can still find warm sea temperatures, sunny afternoons and beaches that feel like summer. Travel farther and October can also be an excellent shoulder-season month for more adventurous family trips.

For this guide, we have deliberately not just listed destinations we already cover on the blog. We looked at which places genuinely work well in October, then matched those with destinations we know ourselves or already write about on Time off around the world. The result is a mix of easy European sunshine, long-haul escapes, an adventurous South American option and one destination where the autumn colours are the whole point.

1. Canary Islands: one of the safest bets for October sun

If your priority is reliable warmth without a long-haul flight, the Canary Islands are difficult to beat. October still feels very summery, with average temperatures around 26ยฐC and long sunny days, yet the islands offer much more than a resort-and-pool holiday.

Beach in Tenerife, one of our favourite family-friendly October destinations

Tenerife is particularly easy with children because you can combine beach days with Teide National Park, villages and family attractions. Gran Canaria gives you a similar mix, Lanzarote is brilliant for volcanic landscapes and shorter drives, while Fuerteventura is an obvious choice if long sandy beaches are the priority.

We have travelled around Tenerife ourselves and loved getting away from the busiest resort areas. Our guide to the more authentic side of Tenerife is a good starting point. We will also be adding our Fuerteventura experience to the blog.

Why October works: warm days, beach weather, plenty of family accommodation and enough variety for days away from the pool.

Family booking tip

With babies or toddlers, we would prioritise a heated pool, family rooms and somewhere you can walk to the beach and restaurants. Tenerife has the widest choice; Fuerteventura is particularly appealing for a quieter beach-focused stay.

2. Malta: Mediterranean warmth without a long journey

Malta makes a lot of sense for the October school holidays. The sea is still relatively warm, days are generally mild to warm and the island is compact enough that you can combine beaches, historic towns and short excursions without spending hours in the car.

Our trip to Malta, an easy family destination for the October holidays

With children, that compact size is a real advantage. Valletta, Mdina, the Three Cities and the coast all give you very different days, while Gozo can be added without turning the trip into a complicated itinerary. October can bring rain and the occasional storm, so we would not sell Malta as guaranteed beach weather, but it remains a strong shoulder-season destination because there is plenty to do if the weather changes.

We already have a 4-day Malta itinerary, which works well as a starting point for a family break.

Why October works: warm Mediterranean conditions, manageable travel from northern Europe and a good balance of beaches, history and sightseeing.

Family booking tip

Mellieฤงa is useful if easy beach access matters most, while Sliema is practical for ferries, restaurants and sightseeing. With small children, we would choose one well-connected base rather than move accommodation.

3. Mauritius: a bigger escape with excellent October conditions

If you want the October holidays to feel like a real escape, Mauritius is one of the strongest long-haul options. October is at the end of the cooler, drier season and temperatures are already climbing, making it a very pleasant time for beaches, pools and sightseeing before the hotter and more humid part of the Mauritian summer.

For families with babies or younger children, Mauritius can be especially easy if you choose the right resort. Many hotels are built around calm lagoons, pools and gardens, so the rhythm of the holiday can stay simple. At the same time, botanical gardens, wildlife parks, waterfalls and markets give you plenty of options away from the beach.

We recently stayed at Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers with a baby and will be adding our full family review to the blog.

Why October works: warm tropical weather, relatively low rainfall and excellent family-resort options.

Family booking tip

With babies or toddlers, the hotel matters a lot here. We would look for a calm lagoon, good shade, family rooms, easy meal times and, ideally, childcare or a baby club. The north and west coasts have many excellent family options.

4. Cyprus: warm sea and easy family beach days

Cyprus is one of the strongest Mediterranean options if you still want a real beach holiday in October. Days are warm but generally easier for sightseeing than in midsummer, while the sea remains attractive for swimming.

That balance is especially useful with younger children. You can still have a pool-and-beach holiday but add archaeological sites, villages and easy excursions without planning the whole day around extreme heat. Paphos and Protaras are both straightforward family bases with plenty of accommodation and restaurants.

Why October works: a good chance of swimming weather combined with much more comfortable sightseeing temperatures than in July and August.

Family booking tip

Paphos is a good choice if you want beach time plus sightseeing, while Protaras is particularly easy for a family beach holiday. For younger children, look for a shallow beach, a children’s pool and restaurants within walking distance.

5. South Africa: spring, wildlife and a brilliant family road trip

South Africa is one of the most interesting October options in our wider travel archive. It is spring, the Cape is becoming greener and warmer, and October can still overlap with Southern Right whale season along the Western Cape. In wildlife areas, September and October are also a fascinating period because newborn animals begin to appear.

Lions during our South Africa road trip, a highlight for families who love wildlife

For a family trip, the great advantage is variety. Cape Town gives you beaches, mountains, gardens and indoor options; the Cape Peninsula works beautifully as a day trip; and a longer itinerary can combine wildlife, coast and road-trip scenery. It is not a short October-break destination from Europe, but for a full school-holiday week or longer it offers far more variety than a pure resort stay.

We have already travelled across the country and put together a 2-week South Africa road trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town, as well as a separate guide to the Cape of Good Hope.

Why October works: spring weather, wildlife, the end of whale season in the Cape and an exceptional mix of road trip and nature experiences.

Family booking tip

Cape Town is the easiest place to start, especially around the V&A Waterfront, Green Point or Sea Point where restaurants and family activities are close together. If you add a safari, we would choose a family-friendly lodge with shorter game drives.

6. Morocco: warm, colourful and easier to explore than in midsummer

Morocco is a great October choice if you want somewhere that feels genuinely different without committing to a very long flight. Autumn is one of the most comfortable periods for exploring the country, particularly if you want to combine cities, the Atlas region or the desert with time on the Atlantic coast.

With small children, we would keep the itinerary relatively simple. Agadir is the easiest base for a relaxed beach holiday, while Marrakech gives you a completely different experience with gardens, riads and the medina. With a week, combining the two can work better than trying to cover half the country.

Why October works: warmth without peak-summer heat, manageable flight times from Europe and a real change of culture and scenery.

Family booking tip

Agadir is the easiest option if you want a pool-and-beach holiday with young children. Marrakech is more stimulating but also more intense, so a hotel or riad with a pool and enough space for downtime makes a real difference.

7. Madeira: nature, pools and mild autumn weather

Madeira is a good alternative if your idea of an October family holiday is less about lying on a sandy beach and more about being outdoors. The climate stays mild through autumn and the island is brilliant for combining short walks, viewpoints, gardens, natural pools and small towns.

The important thing to understand about Madeira is that the weather can vary enormously across the island. The south coast can be sunny while the mountains are sitting in cloud, which is actually useful on a family holiday: keep the plan flexible and move towards the better weather rather than sticking rigidly to a schedule.

Why October works: mild temperatures, fewer summer crowds and plenty of outdoor activities without extreme heat.

Family booking tip

Funchal is the most convenient base if you want restaurants, gardens and easy access to excursions. With younger children, a hotel with a good pool is worth prioritising because Madeira is more about exploring than classic sandy-beach days.

8. Peru: an adventurous October trip for families with older children

Peru is not the obvious choice for every family, but October is genuinely one of the better months for the Andean part of the country. The drier season in the Andes runs through October, which means Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu can still benefit from sunnier days before the wetter season begins in November.

Machu Picchu during our Peru trip

We would mainly suggest Peru to families with older children or teenagers rather than as an easy baby-and-toddler holiday. Altitude, longer transfers and early starts make it a more demanding trip, but for adventurous families it can be unforgettable.

Our 2-week Peru and Bolivia itinerary covers the route we travelled, and we also have separate guides to Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.

Why October works: the tail end of the drier Andean season, spectacular scenery and an unusually rewarding long-haul option for adventurous families.

Family booking tip

This is one destination where we would favour comfort and location over squeezing the budget. Staying centrally in Cusco reduces unnecessary transfers, while a few nights in the Sacred Valley can help create a slower pace around Machu Picchu.

9. Seychelles: tropical beaches that work beautifully with young children

If you want a tropical October holiday that is genuinely family-friendly, the Seychelles deserve a place on this list. October falls within a favourable period and sits around the calmer transition between the trade winds, which can mean excellent conditions for beach days, swimming and snorkelling.

For families with babies and younger children, the big attraction is how easy some of the beaches can be. On Mahรฉ, Anse ร  la Mouche has very shallow, calm water, while Beau Vallon combines gentle swimming conditions with restaurants, shops and useful facilities close by. On Praslin, Anse Volbert is another particularly practical family beach with shallow water and plenty of accommodation nearby.

The Seychelles also work well if you do not want every day to revolve around organised activities. A family trip can be built around simple beach mornings, short island drives, boat trips, giant tortoises and relaxed afternoons at the hotel. With small children, we would probably avoid trying to see too many islands and instead choose one main base, adding a second island only if the trip is long enough to keep the pace easy.

Why October works: warm tropical weather, calmer conditions between trade winds and several shallow, protected beaches that are especially suitable for families with younger children.

Family booking tip

Mahรฉ is the easiest choice for a first trip because you avoid an extra transfer and still have a huge choice of beaches. Beau Vallon is particularly practical for families who want restaurants and facilities nearby; Praslin works well as a second base if the trip is long enough.

10. Belgian Ardennes: if you want autumn rather than an escape from it

Not every October holiday needs to involve chasing the sun. If you only have a long weekend, or if what you really want is forest, colour and cosy evenings, the Belgian Ardennes deserve to stay on this list.

Viewpoint in the Belgian Ardennes, a beautiful family destination in autumn

October is when the wooded valleys around the Semois and Lesse become particularly beautiful. With children, you do not need ambitious hikes to enjoy them: short forest walks, viewpoints, castles and towns like Bouillon are enough to create a proper autumn break.

Our Belgian Ardennes road-trip itinerary includes plenty of stops that can also be combined into a much shorter October weekend.

Why October works: beautiful forest colours, very little travel effort and the atmosphere of autumn itself.

Family booking tip

Bouillon is our favourite practical base because you can combine the castle, short walks and the Semois without long drives. A cottage or apartment can be especially useful with children in autumn when wet clothes, early dinners and quiet evenings become part of the trip.

Which October destination should you choose with kids?

If your priority is warmth and swimming without a long-haul flight, we would start with the Canary Islands, Malta or Cyprus. If you want a more exotic beach escape, Mauritius is the strongest fit. Morocco offers culture and warmth with a shorter journey, while Madeira is better for active families who prefer nature to resort life.

For a bigger family adventure, South Africa gives you the best mixture of wildlife, coast and road trip. Peru is the most ambitious choice and suits older children best. The Seychelles are the better fit for families with babies or younger children who want a tropical holiday built around easy beach days and a slower rhythm. And for a short break close to home, the Ardennes are exactly what October should look like.

Asian destinations we would not prioritise in October

We have also travelled in Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Malaysia, Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia, but we would not include them simply to make this list more exotic. Sri Lanka is in its second inter-monsoon period in October and November, so heavy showers can occur across the island. The Maldives can still be in the tail end of the southwest monsoon, while weather in Thailand and Malaysia depends heavily on the exact region.

That does not mean you cannot have a great October trip there. It simply means that if the question is โ€œwhere is October genuinely one of the better times to go?โ€, the destinations above make a stronger shortlist.

Frequently asked questions about October family holidays

Where is hot in October for a family holiday?

The Canary Islands, Cyprus, Mauritius and Morocco are all strong choices. The Canary Islands are particularly easy from Europe, while Mauritius gives you the most tropical experience.

Where can families still swim in Europe in October?

The Canary Islands and Cyprus are among the strongest options, while Malta can also work well, especially earlier in the month. Weather becomes less predictable in the Mediterranean as October progresses.

What is a good long-haul destination for October half-term?

Mauritius and the Seychelles are our easiest long-haul choices for a relaxed family holiday, especially with younger children. South Africa is better if you want wildlife and a road trip, while Peru is a much more adventurous option for families with older children.

Is South Africa good in October with children?

October is spring in South Africa and can be an excellent time for a family trip. The Cape is particularly attractive at this time of year, whale sightings may still be possible along the coast, and wildlife areas offer very different experiences from a European autumn holiday.

Is October a good time to visit Peru?

October is still part of the drier period in the Peruvian Andes, making it a good month for Cusco and Machu Picchu before the wetter season begins. Because of altitude and travel distances, we would recommend it more for families with older children than for a very relaxed toddler holiday.

Our approach to autumn family travel

The best October destination depends on what you actually want from the holiday. If the goal is one last week of summer, it makes sense to travel south rather than trying to force a beach holiday somewhere already moving into autumn. If the goal is wildlife, culture or a bigger adventure, October opens up a completely different set of possibilities.

And sometimes the best autumn holiday is simply autumn itself. That is why the Ardennes remain on our list alongside Mauritius, Peru and the Canary Islands: they offer a completely different kind of October trip, but one that makes just as much sense at that time of year.
