Day 1 – Wissant, Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez
Morning in Wissant
Start your weekend in Wissant, a small seaside village between Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez. The wide beach is the main attraction and is ideal for a slow first morning after the drive. At low tide, the beach feels enormous and there is plenty of room for children to play, collect shells or simply walk along the water.
Wissant itself is small enough to explore on foot. You can pick up bread or pastries in the village, walk along the seafront and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere before heading towards the cliffs.
Family tip: Check the tide timetable before planning a long beach walk. The coastline changes considerably between low and high tide, and some stretches become much narrower as the water comes in.
Cap Blanc-Nez
From Wissant, drive to Cap Blanc-Nez, one of the most iconic viewpoints on the Opal Coast. The white chalk cliffs rise above the Channel and offer spectacular views along the coast. On a clear day, you may even see the English coastline on the other side of the water.
You do not need to plan a difficult hike to enjoy the scenery. The main viewpoints are accessible with short walks, which makes this a good stop with younger children. It can be very windy, even when the weather feels calm in the villages below, so bring an extra layer for everyone.
Cap Gris-Nez
Continue to Cap Gris-Nez, the second of the Deux-Caps. The landscape is different from Cap Blanc-Nez but equally impressive, with rugged cliffs, open grassland and wide sea views. The two capes are close enough to combine comfortably in the same day without spending much time driving.

Its location makes it easy to continue towards Wimereux the next morning. Always check current access conditions and prices before arrival, especially on busy weekends.

Day 2 – Wimereux and Boulogne-sur-Mer
Morning in Wimereux
Spend the second morning in Wimereux, one of the prettiest seaside towns on the Opal Coast. Its seafront promenade, colourful villas and beach give the town a very different atmosphere from the wild cliffs of the previous day.
The promenade is easy with a stroller and works well for a relaxed family walk. Depending on the season and weather, you can spend some time on the beach, stop for coffee or simply enjoy the sea views before continuing to Boulogne-sur-Mer.
Boulogne-sur-Mer
Boulogne-sur-Mer is a good final stop because it combines a historic old town with one of the region’s best rainy-day activities. If the weather is pleasant, walk through the fortified upper town and around the ramparts before heading down towards the seafront.
With small children, you can keep the visit short and simply wander through the old streets before lunch. If you have more time, Boulogne also works well as a base for extending the weekend by an extra night.
Nausicaá with kids
Nausicaá, the French National Sea Centre, is one of the best family attractions on the Opal Coast. It is much more than a small aquarium, so allow several hours if you want to visit properly. For us, late spring and early autumn are particularly appealing because the coast is quieter while there is still enough daylight for long walks.

Just keep the itinerary flexible, as strong wind and rain can make the cliff stops less comfortable with small children.
