Exploring Bardenas Reales in a Campervan

Spain is often celebrated for its rich history, vibrant cities, and sun-soaked coastlines. But tucked away in the northern region of Navarra lies a natural wonder that defies the typical image of the country. The Bardenas Reales, a semi-desert landscape covering over 42,000 hectares, is one of Spain’s most unique terrains. With its surreal rock formations, vast plains, and deep ravines, this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve offers an experience unlike any other in Spain.

A Geological Marvel

The Bardenas Reales is a testament to the power of nature. Over millions of years, wind and water have sculpted the clay, chalk, and sandstone into an extraordinary landscape. The result is a maze of plateaus, canyons, and isolated hills that look more like something out of a science fiction movie than a real place on Earth.

One of the most iconic landmarks in the Bardenas Reales is Castildetierra, a natural monument that has become a symbol of the region. This towering rock formation, with its narrow base and broad top, resembles a chimney or a bizarre sandcastle left behind by a giant. It’s one of the most photographed spots in the Bardenas, and for good reason—its silhouette against the backdrop of the barren landscape is nothing short of breathtaking.

Practical information

  • The access to the Bardenas Reales National Park is free of charge.
  • You can visit the Park walking, by bike or by car/campervan.

  • Speed limit: 40 km/h speed limit

  • Before entering the park in Arguedas, don’t hesitate to stop at the visitor’s center to pick up maps, learn about the area’s ecology, and use facilities before heading into the park.

How to best visit Bardenas reales with a campervan

Whether you travel by bike, car or campervan, one of the best ways to explore the Bardenas Reales is by taking the 34-kilometer loop trail known as the “Ruta circular” or the circular route. This route provides a comprehensive overview of the park’s main attractions, including the Castildetierra, the Pisquerra area, and the Ralla ravine. When travelling with smaller children this is the most convenient way of discovering the Bardenas.

The route also passes by several observation points, where you can stop to take in panoramic views of the surrounding desert. These points are perfect for photography or simply soaking in the quiet, almost surreal atmosphere of the Bardenas.

Those who are lucky enough to travel by campervan can take a well-deserved break along the road. However, in order to preserve the stunning nature of the Bardenas reales, it is strictly forbidden to spend the night inside the national park which closes its doors one hour before sunset. While the speed limit in the park is 40, you’ll most probably drive slower than that in your campervan because of the unpaved road. Make sure you have enough time to finish the trail before the park is closing.

Fortunately, the area offers a number of free campervan grounds next to the desert. We can definitely recommend the huge and free parking space in Arguedas which allows a beautiful view on the caves from your campervan terrasse.

Don‘t forget to also take a walk to the village and enjoy a drink at one of the restaurants in order to get the ultimate Spanish experience.

Bardenas Reales with children

You can easily travel the Bardenas Reales with children. Whether you are going by campervan or by car, this geological landscape is easy to visit for the whole family. However, it can get hot very quickly. Don’t forget to take enough water, sunscreen and a hat in order to be prepared for your walks outside the car.

Conclusion

The Bardenas Reales is one of Spain’s hidden gems—a place where the forces of nature have created a landscape that feels almost alien. It’s a reminder of the incredible diversity of Spain’s natural beauty and a testament to the enduring allure of the wild. So if you find yourself in northern Spain, take the time to explore this remarkable desert. The Bardenas Reales is waiting to be discovered by you and your family.
